sir,
{
Appellate Bill.
With reference to the speeches of the Hon.
Mr. Osborne and the Hon. Mr. Murray Stewart on the Committee stage
of the above Bill regarding the appointment of a third Judge, I am
requested by my Committee to inform you that my Committee have
circularised all the firms of Solicitors practising in this
Colony on the subject.
One firm expressed no opinion. The rest were
unanimously of opinion that a third Judge ought to be appointed
and that such third Judge should be of the same standing as the
Chief Justice, that is to say, two of the three Judges should be
of practically equal standing (though it is not suggested their
salaries should be equal) and one only should be of junior stand-
-ing.
I have the honour to request that you will
cause a copy of this letter to be forward to the Secretary of
State.
The Hon.
I have etc.,
(Sd.) W. E. L. Shenton,
Hon. Secretary.
The Colonial Secretary.
